ABOUT US
Africa for Social Change (AFSC) was founded from lived experience in Nakivale Refugee Settlement.
In 2017, our founder, Jonathan Djumbe, witnessed how illiteracy, language barriers, and lack of skills were preventing youth and adults from accessing opportunities around them. He started an English for Adults initiative to break language barriers and open doors to employment and self-reliance. Many participants went on to secure jobs with humanitarian organizations, start small businesses, and pursue better livelihoods.
As the program grew, it became clear that education alone was not enough. In 2018, financial literacy, entrepreneurship training, and Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) were introduced to help youth and adults build sustainable livelihoods.
At the same time, the education crisis facing refugee children became impossible to ignore. With most refugees in Uganda being children and many out of school, AFSC mobilized community members to build classrooms and create learning spaces for vulnerable children.
Today, AFSC works with children, youth, and adults through education and livelihoods programs, empowering communities to become self-reliant and drive positive social change.
